When did Halloween become Whoreloween?

This question was posed by my daughter-in-law (good questions Janet) and I agree.  Doesn't anyone remember the good ol' days of  "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!" when costumes consisted of a white sheet with two holes cut out for eyes? When costumes were about becoming something you weren't for one day of the year, not becoming a prostitute for a night.

I used to love Halloween (actually I still do).  I mean L-O-V-E  it!  I love going to pick out our pumpkin.  Carving Jack-O-Lanterns, baking pumpkin seeds, and nibbling on candy are always highlights at our house too.  I used to start thinking about costumes around August. Heck, I even got married on Halloween (well two days before but that's because Halloween was on a Monday that year)!

So why does it seem that now that we see so many grown women seeing how slutty that they can dress for Halloween? Where is the creativity that  offered a 1920s flapper dress out of a trash bag and Christmas tinsel, a Mary Queen of Scots dress out of a green velour tablecloth and hippies dressed from their parents (or grandparents) closets?

  2. Do you remember dressing my sister as a punk rocker with a black garbage bag and dog chains?

  3. Yeah, I believe Halloween became Whoreloween when two gals from OCHS dressed the younger sister in a black trash bag and laughed at the sight. Funny, I just found out that my neighbors here in CA refer to our annual Halloween potluck on the front lawn as the "white trash" party so I'm thinking I'll just wear a trash bag again this year! But my 10-year old daughter will be dressed in a southern belle hoop skirt, don't worry!
